The Steeltown Tote is a beginner sewing pattern for those interested in bagmaking.  The tote can be made in two sizes, and includes an option for a contrast bottom.  With step-by-step instructions and full colour photos, this pattern will show you how to make a bag that is uniquely yours.  Let's get sewing!

Difficulty Level: Beginner

This is a measure-and-cut pattern.  All pattern measurements are in inches (imperial).

Finished Dimensions: 

Small Bag: 13" by 10" by 3"

Large Bag: 13" by 13" by 4"

-long straps that can be worn comfortably over the shoulder

Material Requirements

FABRIC

Exterior: 0.5 yards 10-13oz waxed canvas, quilting cotton, or linen blend.

Contrast Bottom: 0.5 yards of waxed canvas (or one fat quarter if using cotton or linen).

Lining: 0.5 yards of cotton-linen canvas, or quilting cotton

STRAPPING

1.5 yards of 1” or 1.5" wide strapping such as cotton or nylon webbing

INTERFACING

2 yards of fusible woven interfacing such as Pellon SF-101 (based on 20” wide)

OR 1 yard of interfacing for the lining only, if you are using waxed canvas for the exterior. Waxed canvas does not require interfacing.

Tools & Supplies

Cutting mat, rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, fabric scissors, wonder clips, iron, fabric pen, point turner, seam ripper.

Size 90-14 or 100-16 (denim) needle, a presser foot for your sewing machine, and matching thread.

Optional:

4 small (6mm post) double cap rivets for strap reinforcement

Double cap rivet setter and anvil.

Hammer or mallet (I recommend a bakelite mallet).

1/8” drive punch or rotary punch for making holes in the fabric.
